Cardiovascular risk factors associated with lower baseline cognitive performance in HIV-positive persons
Conclusions: In this HIV-positive population with high CD4 cell counts, neurocognitive impairment was associated with prior CVD. While good concordance was observed between gp120 phenotyping and prediction of R5-tropic virus, the results suggest that accurate prediction of X4-tropic virus would require further algorithm development. At the recently concluded International AIDS conference in Vienna, Austria, there was an emotional call to eradicate Mother to Child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV. Participants were particularly charged when Austria, which hosted the conference, presented their progress, noting that MTCT has been virtually eliminated, recording about two to three cases a year. Study Suggests Profiling Anti-Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Antibodies is Useful for Monitoring Treatment
&ldquo;[Researchers] quantified antibody responses to the hepatitis C virus (HCV) proteome that are associated with sustained virologic response (SVR) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/HCV-coinfected patients treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. Analysis of pre- and posttreatment samples revealed significant decreases in the combined anti-core, anti-E1, and anti-NS4 HCV antibody titers in those with SVRs but not in those who experienced relapse or who did not respond. Furthermore, anti-HIV p24 antibody titers inversely correlated with treatment response. These results suggest that profiling anti-HCV antibody is useful for monitoring HCV therapy, especially in discriminating between those who experience relapse and those who have SVRs at 48 weeks.&rdquo; More information ...

Abstract&nbsp;&nbsp;In a survey of 1,313 men reporting on 2,465 partnerships recruited at beer halls in Harare, Zimbabwe, 2.5% met a definition of ?sugar daddy?: men with a non-marital partner at least 10 years younger and under 20&nbsp;years old, and exchanged cash or goods for sex. Men engaging in intergenerational sex with a teenage woman had similar HIV prevalence, incomes, and condom use as men in other partnerships.
